The healing touch of massage therapy and bodywork is essential to the overall well-being of the body, mind, and spirit. It can reduce stress, ease muscle tension, improve blood circulation, and induce a universal sense of tranquility. Various forms of bodywork have existed for thousands of years, with the earliest documented mention occurring about three thousand years ago. Its undeniable effects have allowed it to evolve as a significant and integral part of wellness. Highland Yoga currently offers Swedish Massage, Orthopedic Massage, Structural Integration and Thai Yoga Massage. A brief description of each service is listed below.

Bodywork Descriptions

Thai Yoga Bodywork

A powerful experience of applied yoga therapeutics: therapeutic stretching, alignment principles, range-of-motion exercises, joint mobilization, assisted Hatha yoga postures, acupressure and reflex point therapy, rhythmic palming techniques, deep tissue compression, toning of internal organs, pranayama techniques, energy balancing, and meditative practice.

Swedish Massage

One of the most commonly taught and well-known massage techniques, Swedish massage is a vigorous system of treatment designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation. Five basic strokes, all flowing toward the heart, are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. The disrobed client is covered by a sheet, with only the area being worked on exposed. Therapists use a combination of kneading, rolling, vibration, percussive, and tapping movements, with the application of oil, to reduce friction on the skin. The many benefits of Swedish massage may include generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and improved circulation, which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a form of bodywork that is manipulative in nature and seeks to rebalance the body by releasing tension in the fascia. Long, stretching strokes are utilized to release muscular tension. Myofascial Release is a manual therapy technique that is utilized to help relieve pain and tension that is due to injury or stress. It involves releasing and unwinding the fascia (connective tissue) that surrounds each muscle and interconnects all of the other internal parts of the body. This tissue layer, which connects every muscle, tendon, ligament, bone, and organ in our bodies, can store memories of physical trauma. Releasing these restrictions allows us to discharge recurring emotional as well as physical pain.

Structural Integration

Based on the work of Dr. Ida P. Rolf, structural integration (sometimes called Rolfing®) is based on the idea that the entire structural order of the body needs to be realigned and balanced with the gravitational forces around a central vertical line representing gravity’s influence. Therapeutic intervention is directed toward the myofascial system--the ligaments, muscles, tendons, and surrounding connective tissues. A practitioner of structural integration has a ten-session cycle of work, in which different angles and degrees of physical pressure are used to stretch and guide fascia to a place of easier movement. The process is not intended to cure symptoms; its goal is to create a more resilient, higher-energy system, free of inhibitions due to past trauma.

BodyTalk

BodyTalk is based on the belief that the body knows how to heal itself but, similar to a computer, can sometimes get overloaded, leading to a malfunction. A BodyTalk practitioner offers no diagnosis or prescription, just a session which uses muscle testing and light tapping on the head and sternum to re establish channels of communication within the body. This ‘rewiring’ therefore helps the body to start functioning properly again.

Christy

Christy began studying yoga with Helena Berg in 1999 while studying massage therapy in Maui, HI. Amidst the natural beauty of the island and with the gentle brilliance of her teaching, the wisdom of yoga began to weave it's way into her being. As she moved and traveled, her yoga practice became a gauge; a tangible way to track the effects of her choices on her physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. This budding awareness as well as working with regular massage clients who were constantly having discoveries and epiphanies of their own, gave her a curiosity as well as a sense of responsibility to learn more. This led her to study Somatic (mind-body) Psychology and Yoga at Naropa University in Boulder, CO. Christy currently offers Swedish Massage, BodyTalk, and Thai Massage at Highland.
