The healing touch of massage therapy and bodywork is essential to the overall well-being of the body, mind, and spirit. It can reduce stress, ease muscle tension, improve blood circulation, and induce a universal sense of tranquility. Various forms of bodywork have existed for thousands of years, with the earliest documented mention occurring about three thousand years ago. Its undeniable effects have allowed it to evolve as a significant and integral part of wellness. Highland Yoga currently offers Swedish Massage, Orthopedic Massage, Structural Integration and Thai Yoga Massage. A brief description of each service is listed on the right.

Our Therapists:

Stephen

Stephen began his bodywork career in 2002 and for the last 7 years has developed a truly wholistic approach to wellness. He appreciates the unique challenges that each body brings him and strives for balance in all aspects of his bodywork. His enduring interest in bodywork has led him to study with some of the most well regarded bodyworkers in the field. He continues to advance his education yearly, studying things as diverse as Orthopedic Massage, Structural Integration, Visceral Manipulation,  Biodynamic Cranial Sacral Therapy and cadaver dissection. For the last 5 years he has taught at the Institute for Therapeutic Massage instructing students in massage therapy and anatomy and physiology.

He currently offers Swedish Massage, Orthopedic Massage, and Structural Integration at Highland.

Christy

Christy began studying yoga with Helena Berg in 1999 while studying massage therapy in Maui, HI. Amidst the natural beauty of the island and with the gentle brilliance of her teaching, the wisdom of yoga began to weave it's way into her being. As she moved and traveled, her yoga practice became a gauge; a tangible way to track the effects of her choices on her physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. This budding awareness as well as working with regular massage clients who were constantly having discoveries and epiphanies of their own, gave her a curiosity as well as a sense of responsibility to learn more. This led her to study Somatic (mind-body) Psychology and Yoga at Naropa University in Boulder, CO.

Christy currently offers Swedish Massage and Thai Massage at Highland.

John

John has completed the Thai Yoga Basic Training of the Thai Yoga Healing Arts at Touchstone Healing Arts in Burlington, VT with Jonas Westring. This course covered the fundamentals of the Thai Yoga Method: myofascial stretching, joint mobilization, energy balancing, acupressure, rhythmic soft tissue compression, biomechanical alignment principles, Hatha yoga postures, mindfulness meditation, and yoga breathing.

John currently offers Thai Yoga at Highland

Kelly

Kelly became interested in massage therapy as her appreciation grew for how the body “works” through her yoga practice. As a solution for her “escape” from the rat race she decided to obtain training as a massage therapist and, like her yoga practice, enjoys learning and implementing various techniques for a more well rounded practice and to address the individual needs of her clients. Often a variety of techniques may be employed during a single treatment.

Kelly currently offers Swedish massage and Tui Na at Highland.

Brian

Brian is a graduate of the 300 Hour Lotus Yoga Teacher Training program and has been teaching since November of 2006.  He is registered with the Yoga Alliance (RYT-200).  He is also certified for kids yoga (through Lotus Yoga) and prenatal yoga (through Mia Borgatta's Ma Yoga Program).  In addition, he has completed the Level 1 Circus Yoga Training and Level 1 Lotus Palm Thai Yoga Massage Training.

Brian currently offers Thai Massage at Highland

Thai Yoga Bodywork

A powerful experience of applied yoga therapeutics: therapeutic stretching, alignment principles, range-of-motion exercises, joint mobilization, assisted Hatha yoga postures, acupressure and reflex point therapy, rhythmic palming techniques, deep tissue compression, toning of internal organs, pranayama techniques, energy balancing, and meditative practice.

Swedish Massage

One of the most commonly taught and well-known massage techniques, Swedish massage is a vigorous system of treatment designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation. Five basic strokes, all flowing toward the heart, are used to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. The disrobed client is covered by a sheet, with only the area being worked on exposed. Therapists use a combination of kneading, rolling, vibration, percussive, and tapping movements, with the application of oil, to reduce friction on the skin. The many benefits of Swedish massage may include generalized relaxation, dissolution of scar tissue adhesions, and improved circulation, which may speed healing and reduce swelling from injury.

Orthopedic Massage  Combining some elements of sports and medical massage, orthopedic massage integrates ten modalities to treat soft-tissue pain and injury. Emphasis is placed on understanding both the injury and its rehabilitation criteria. Three basic elements adhered to, despite the technical diversity in treatment, are assessment, matching the treatment to the injury, and adaptability of treatment.

Structural Integration

Based on the work of Dr. Ida P. Rolf, structural integration is based on the idea that the entire structural order of the body needs to be realigned and balanced with the gravitational forces around a central vertical line representing gravity’s influence. Therapeutic intervention is directed toward the myofascial system--the ligaments, muscles, tendons, and surrounding connective tissues. A practitioner of structural integration has a ten-session cycle of work, in which different angles and degrees of physical pressure are used to stretch and guide fascia to a place of easier movement. The process is not intended to cure symptoms; its goal is to create a more resilient, higher-energy system, free of inhibitions due to past trauma.

Tui Na

(pronounced 'tway-nah') massage is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine to address a wide range of health problems. Tui Na uses wave like motions and rhythms to loosen joints, nourish the muscles and encourage the flow of “chi” (or “qi” or “prana”). It is characterized by skillful strokes of the fingers, gliding or rolling hand and arm movements. Gentle shaking, joint rotations and stretching compliment this vigorous style. It may also be known as meridian massage as it opens stagnant acupressure channels and encourages the flow of chi to any deficient areas. It improves mobility, fluidity and works from a place of bringing balance and optimal functioning to the body, mind and spirit. Clients are fully clothed during a Tui Na massage treatment.
