In this class the “core” or central axis of the body is explored as a key to developing a felt sense of alignment. Alignment refers to the optimal placement of the physical body and the corresponding muscular engagements that enable practitioners to benefit fully and safely from a practice of physical postures (asana). The class typically begins with a moderate warm up to get in touch with the core and then moves into holding postures for longer periods of time to uncover the nuances of alignment. Props such as straps and blocks may also be used to accentuate a particular aspect of alignment and deepen our understanding of the asana. Breathing and meditation techniques may also be offered to align body and mind as each move toward a balance of strength and flexibility.
A mixed level class is suitable for students of various experience levels. Offerings and explorations will move beyond that typically found in a beginner class, and may include arm balances as well as inversions. Modifications of postures will be available to make asana more accessible, and more advanced variations will be offered for those seeking an appropriately challenging practice.
